My Review of "Strangers: A Memoir of Marriage" on Good by Belle Burden on Goodreads

Strangers: A Memoir of MarriageStrangers: A Memoir of Marriage by Belle Burden
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

This was one of those books that I could not put down after picking up. It's the true story of Belle Burden, a woman married for 21 years living the perfect life suddenly finds out her husband was having an affair, after which her husband decides to leave her, walking out on their marriage without a warning or explanation. It's an amazing read, it had an impact on me, as my 24 year marriage is coming to an end, this book made me think about the issues of the patriarchy, how invested a lot, I'd say most people are in maintaining a system where men can do what they want and get away with it. My marriage , separation and divorce is not quite like this one, but I still could not help but reflect on the perspective of this woman, and all women. It's hard to endure being left, it's harder still to talk about it. Efforts to silence this woman by attacking her character says a lot about ourselves. Why do we do that? Why is it so important to protect men at all cost? What makes men more valuable, more important in society? We are not encouraged to talk or ask about these things. This topic makes people really uncomfortable. I am inspired by this person's courage. She did this as far as I can tell, from a place of love and determination. It was very moving.
